Where was Victoria Dwellings?

Postby ALW » Thu Sep 10, 2015 3:58 pm

Hello

I am trying to locate where Victoria Dwellings may have been situated. Does anyone know where this address may have been? My great nan and granddad used to live at
26,Victoria Dwellings, St.Leonards in 1903.

Any info gratefully received-thank you.

Sounds like a little job for a local to have a wander down to the library and look at the street directories. It might help if ALW could let us know the relatives name because that would give us another method for location

Thanks for your replies.

The occupants names were Arthur & Alice Jane Watson, nee Towner.
Their son, my grandfather was called George Albert Watson.

At the time Arthur Watson was a Upholsterers Porter.

I look forward to your help, very much appreciated.

I used the 1901 & 1911 census but unfortunately they were in North St and then All Saints respectively.

Looked at a 1910 map but Victoria Dwellings was not marked on Victoria Road and could not see it anywhere else. It is probably going to be better for someone to look at the directories. With the description "dwellings" is is possible that it might be a behind a main street. It was possibly off East Ascent but I cannot access the info at present

According to the kind folk at Hastings Library, there is no entry at all for a 'Victoria Dwellings' in any directory around 1903, but they will continue to search and let us know, if at all possible.
Maybe it was not called by that exact name or the date was wrong?
There was certainly a 'Victoria Dwellings' in Battersea, London.

I wondered if it was possibly connected with the Royal Victoria Hotel, renamed from the St Leonards Hotel in the mid 1890's? But that possibility is mere speculation.

Hello Richard

Thank you for the reply. The plot thickens!

On my Granddads birth certificate the address is written as 26,Victoria Dwellings,
St.Mary Magdalen, followed by two illegible letters which I will look into, and the address shown in the box with my great nans details it shows 26,Victoria Dwellings, St.Leonards on Sea. Probably nothing in it but thought I would mention it. The date is shown as 04-10-1903, birth registered on 16-11-1903.

I did find the Battersea address as you mentioned.

I'm intrigued now, would love to find where this is, or where it was!

Regards, Alan

Hi My access to family history archive seems to be jammed for newspapers. I had hope it would have cleared today.

I have attached a summary of entries around 1894 that mentions the dwellings. It mentions East Ascent but because it sometimes refers to other issues on the page it might not be correct. It does seem that a lady was wishing to rent out her accommodation in the Dwellings and it may be that they were located off East Ascent.

If anyone has a newspaper subscription they should be able to find it
