In the 1841 census, George Kenward was living with his family on Providence Row. I cannot find it on the map. Is there something else there now? Thank you. Mardell

Re: Providence Row
Providence Row was situated in The Bourne Walk or The Bourne which was a no thoroughfare, this area was cleared , in the 30's ?, to make way for the connection to what is now known as Old London Road

Re: Providence Row
We now have a photo in the gallery of Providence Row if anyone is interested in what it used to look like. Patrick is right, this area was compulsory purchased when the Bourne was redeveloped to make way for the main road.

Re: Providence Row
Sadly, this along with many other passges and twittens were lost for ever when in the 1930's the old town was destroyed beyond belief. This all came about from a report from a health officer by the name of Crecy, who at that time condemed most of the old town living conditions as sanitation was never up to standard. the only way to improve on this was to demolish vast areas and rehouse the people, and in doing so, the heart of Hastings Old Town was destroyed for ever.
Please read a copy of my new book 'Hastings looking back to the future' a tribute to Sidney Little, who was Borough and Water Engineer at that time, and had to follow instructions from the Council as regard to the Bourne clearance scheme.

Re: Providence Row
There was also a Providence Row in Ore close to the junction of Fairlight Road and Old London Road on the site now occupied by the Co op. My mother lived there in the 1930s
