Re: U118?

Interestingly some sources say this sub was refloated and towed away, but this video and another picture somewhere on the internet (but I don't have any record of where), clearly show that it was cut up on site. Apparently there was another washed ashore near Bultherhythe (U131), perhaps that is wha...

Re: Nightclub

The first nightclub (or disco as they used to be called) I can recall in Hastings is the Witch Doctor in Marine Court. There was also one in the High Street called the Hi Fi, which burnt down under somewhat odd circumstances if my memory serves me correctly. As for Saturdays, which is the name I rem...

U118?

I came across two videos showing a German submarine beached off Hastings. Despite the claim that these are seperate incidents that occured in 1914, I strongly suspect they both show U118 which broke away from the vessel towing it and beaced itself off Denmark Place in April 1919. <!-- m --><a class=...

Re: Carlisle Pub (Pelham Arms), Denmark Arms and Public Shel

On the subject of town planning I recently discovered these videos which show the the local council's planning pipe dream. It's dated 1946, but I suspect its actually from the 30s. Some interesting shots of the planner's model town and the real town from that period. <!-- m --><a class="postlink" hr...

Re: Carlisle Pub (Pelham Arms), Denmark Arms and Public Shel

May I just point out that Carlisle Parade is further to the west, between Harold Place and the Smugglers end of Robertson Street: The area where the Carlilse stands is called Denmark Place. Look at the Google map and zoom in. Otherwise you'll confuse the tourists! I'm interested in all periods reall...

Re: Hastings First Trolleybus 1 April 1928

Looked like there was bits of Robertson Street and the Ridge in there too. The trolleybuses replaced the trams, yet they still dig up old tram tracks today. The trams weren't very popular in Hastings, partly because some people thought the overhead wires were unsightly, but the trolleybuses were wel...

Re: Pub memories

GK, The story I was told was that the tower was a folly built by a guy named Wingfield and was originally supposed to have a clock, but Wingfield spent far too much money on the tower's construction and asked Bohemia traders to contribute towards the clock. They told him where he could put his clock...

Re: Pub memories

I recall the Street was called the York Bars for a long while (not to be confused with a previous town centre pub of the same name). You could get into the Bodega Bars (now the Crypt) from a staircase on the right hand side. The cinema had it's own entrance in what is technically Robertson Street, b...

Re: Carlisle Pub (Pelham Arms), Denmark Arms and Public Shel

Well it's listed at 33 Pelham Street at the National Archives and at Dead Pubs and the photo bears this out. The buildings on the left of the photo still exist, I think there's a building society (the Halifax?) there today. The round thing in the photo looks like the skylight from the old undergroun...
