Old Childhood Haunts

Re: School Study Hastings St Leonards

Hello Richard. I went to HGS on Nelson Road from 1951 - 1956/7. There were 'Houses' each indicated by a coloured band around the dreaded shool uniform caps. ( 1/2 hour detention if you were spotted going to or fro school without it !). I was in Norman - light blue and incidentally the housemaster To...

Re: King Family

In the 1940's there was a Mr King who had stables next to the Smithy in Ore village ( now a CO-OP). This was adjacent to Providence Row ( long demolished)_ _ __ _ __ _ _thought it was worth a mention.

Re: William Gallop (1780 ish)

I lived in Offa Road Ore as a child( 1940's) and seem to remember a Gallop family living there. There was also a link with the Kings who had stables next to the smithy which once stood where the Co-oP store is today. Sorry to be a bit vague on this but can find out more if it would help.

Re: Old Pubs and Beer houses in Hastings

Anyone else remember the steam driven brewery wagon that delivered to the Hare and Hounds in Ore? It was quite an event to sit on the high step outside the Pub ( usually with Henry Brown from Providence Row) to watch the hot embers falling onto the road. Ore village was a quieter place in those days...

Re: church street, ore village

I remember the Church Street area having been born in the local hospital ( later St Helen's Hospital) in 1940. We lived in Offa Road and in the late 1940's moved to 156 Victoria Avenue ( Sea Breeze Cottage) which was a detached house. (now demolished). The East Kent Bus garage was next door. I remem...
