Yes ---his shop was open up to the mid eighties. As far as I remember he also lived in the area poss. in the Frederick Rd area.

I've never heard of it called anything but the Promenade. The St Leonards Pier was opened by Lord and Lady Brassey in 1891, suffered damage during the Second War and was demolished in 1951. I would suggest that you write to the Reference Library, Claremont, Hastings, giving them all the information you have, and asking them to look this up in the Hastings Observer for you. If you enclose a fairly large stamped addressed envelope they would probably photocopy the article and send it to ...
