There used to be an old building at the corner of St Helens Road where it joins Sedlescombe Road North and just in from of Old Roar Road. It was acalled St Helens Maternity Home I believe. My sister was born there in 1957!

Re: Pitmans College
What year are you referring to, was there in 1966! Recall a chap taking shorthand as he was going to be a journalist.
I must be the only person who graduated from there with the minimum of 60 wpm shorthand!

Re: Children's home/orphanage
I recall a building that used to be on the route of the 72 bus which went past the station then turned right into Filsham road from St Vincents Road the building was on the right hand side just near the junction. That is the building that I was told was the Orphanage, I seem to think it was sort of ...

Re: st leonards pier ?
Sorry to butt in to this discussion, but I believe you are 100% right Geoff. As a child I lived in St Leonards and I recall that when we first moved down there used to be a large Red Bouy out to see which was there to keep boats away from some undersea wreckage. This would have been in 1956. <br><br...

You had to be a member to go to the evening sessions. I can remember drinking rum and blackcurrent, coke ...

Re: Burton's St Leonards area
My family lived in St Leonards from 1956 to 1966 and I well remember my mother going into Philpots to try on clothes, and the atmosphere of the place. It was all muted colours and quiet and for a child it was facinating. The old fashioned clothes models and displays and the discreet attention of the...

Alexa Elphinston died 1850 where is she buried?
Would appreciate any help in finding grave of above. She died on 26th December at 33 Marina St, St Mary Magdalen. Wonder if she may have been buried in the graveyard in St Leonards that slipped down the hill from from West Hill Road. If she was there is it likely that she would have been reburied if...
