Re: Hastings Railway History

Racing bringing the Railway to Hastings ?! - a real red herring. The temporary terminus near The Bull was to have some paying traffic before the link section and bridge to what became West Marina was built. Press reports even mention the coaches waiting to rush the passengers into town. Old maps hav...

Union Row or Fishers Cottages ?

I have flagged the photo purporting to be Union Row as being suspect. Dissenting views most welcome !. I was thrown for a while by believing references to theatre exits into UR, which I suspect were Union Street (an alley before 19th century widening). I've left details in the gallery, but throw it ...

Re: F S Mann carte de visite

I think Castle St/Breeds Place - Beach Terrace being on the other side of the 'road' rather than in rough alignment.

Re: Henry Rose, Grocer in Queens Road

A mention of no. 22 - but not a grocer https://www.1066.net/hastings/queens_road_hastings/ No mention, but flavour of Queens Rd - the first pic has QR in mid-shot. Last on right is almost to your numbers ... I think. No shop fronts at that stage. https://www.sussexexpress.co.uk/news/exploring-the-ea...

Re: Dobell and Bros., Clockmakers

On Google streetview number 21 is TinTins bar - shabby chic, in that the original curved window structure and mosaic foyer seem to be in place.

Here is nearby no 15

Sketch c1860 - Looking down from perhaps junction of Old London Rd and Priory Rd, and comparing with the 1872 map 1. Buildings rising to top left are High Wickham 2. Large building on right is Halton House? 3. Single building to left of 2. (and opp white bldg) with 2 chimneys, one with smoke is perh...

Re: 124 Old London Road

Too young, yes indeed. Would have travelled up Old London Road a few times, but can certainly place being there to visit Fernbank when younger brother was born in 1962 - I was not yet 4 !. This site will be of interest, but I found it a bit higgledy-piggledy. There are mentions of Clarence Villa and...
