Speckled Wood, Ore

Long time ago I used to attend Sandown Junior School. At end of day I used to walk down Sandown Road, cut across what is shown on maps as Speckled Wood, to get to Percy Road. Now we never used to call Speckled Wood by that name, but I cannot remember what we did call it. Anybody any ideas please?. S...

Re: Grammar School Football (Scratch Sixes)

Just another thought. Have I dreamt it or do I remember that the 'playground' was called the 'Flat'. If not it was called something different from merely being the playground.

Saxon Road, Ore

Just a query if anyone knows? As you travel up Saxon Road from the village centre with the church behind you, on the left, the first 5 ( numbers 1 to 9 I think,) are of a different design to the rest of the road. It looks either as if these were re-built houses or were built of a different design or...

Re: Ruins of Old Ore church

Thanks a lot. Never used to go up that way unless it was to meet the girls coming out of the High School, or going to the Pilot Field with my Dad for football, or both Mum and Dad for speedway. I must go up and take a look.

Ruins of Old Ore church

Having been born and brought up in the '40,s and '50,s in Ore, and thinking I knew everything about the place, I was most surprised to discover references to old Ore church, together with photo's of the steeple. I had no idea this old church existed. Either that or my memory is getting worse. Please...

Re: Grammar School Football (Scratch Sixes)

I forgot about the player grading. I will admit I never got any higher than 5. I,m sure we had to pay to enter and I think the winning team was rewarded with the money. I know (least I think I do) that it was definitely 3 points for a corner and 1 for a goal.
Thanks

Re: Is it Lovers Seat or Lovers Leap?

Thanks a lot. Photo's brought back lots of memories. I moved out of Hastings in 1958 so it looks like the 'seat' lasted not much longer than me.

Is it Lovers Seat or Lovers Leap?

Having been brought up in Hastings in mainly the fifties we used to spend our time exploring the area. One of the places we used to visit on a regular basis was Fairlight with the glens and cliffs. Whenever I asked anyone about Lovers Seat/leap I used to get a different answer depending on who I ask...

Grammar School Football (Scratch Sixes)

Way back when, a long time ago, they used to run a football competition at the old Grammar School. It was 6 a side and was known as 'scratch sixes' . Knockout competition, and from what I can remember, it was 3 points for a corner and 1 point for a goal. I would assume this is no longer so, was just...
