Re: Bayeux Tapestry

Following on from the last post:- I think the Normans gathered in the area where the road from Pye's Farm meets the A2100 The Huscarls camped in Beechdown Wood on the night of the 13th The two sites for the first engagement with the Huscarls is either just NE of Catsfield or at the roundabout at the...

Re: Bayeux Tapestry

Okay, it's time to figuratively take off the gloves...... Since I'm not a historian and have an IQ similar to that of a medieval Norman peasant, I've developed a different view of the last part of the Bayeux Tapestry. Basically, from the initial attack on the Huscarls, the BT shows what was happenin...

Re: Bayeux Tapestry

Yeah , the document that records Caldbec Hill is .... supposedly the Bayeux Tapestry! According to John Grehan, the area to the east of the fire station was known as "Mountjoy" which equates to where the Normans burnt their dead. So one battlefield must be nearby. The problem with the bone...

Re: Bayeux Tapestry

Richard, re your Friday post. You've reminded me that there is an eighth location for the Battle of Hastings. Kathleen Tyson in her translation of the "Carmen" states that she thinks the battle took place to the north of Bodiam. Re yesterdays post. What positive archaeological evidence wou...

Re: Bayeux Tapestry

Why can't we start with a blank sheet of paper, Richard? By starting with the Abbey as the de facto site of the battle you are already "loading the dice". Don't worry, I understand the attachment to the Abbey in the popular mind and for any extraordinary claims there must be extraordinary ...

Re: Bayeux Tapestry

...That is a problem that persists throughout the tapestry, where we are constantly invited to infer what is happening from the pictures, rather than being told what is happening with words ... Perhaps the audience couldn't read?

Re: Bayeux Tapestry

Seahermit said With respect, I would however dispute your assertion that we cannot, a thousand years afterwards, pin down time and place for past events. Sorry, I expressed myself badly there! I was of course referring to the documentary evidence rather than the archaeological. When "Herst"...

Re: Bayeux Tapestry

@ Seahermit Orderic Vitalis in his account of the battle recounts that the Huscarls rode up to the place of a battle, got off their horses and formed their shield wall. Well, if the Fyrd were already there why not say the Huscarls joined with the Fyrd to strengthen the shield wall? If someone could ...

Re: Bayeux Tapestry

Oooooh! I forgot to add...... Before firing off a rebuttal to my observations in a knee jerk reaction, please take time to quietly reflect and have a look at the Tapestry again and see what IS there and don't rely on what you have been told is there. Many thanks to all who are taking part in this di...

Re: Bayeux Tapestry

What does the Tapestry show in my opinion? a) The first encounter shows the Norman knights attacking a shieldwall held together by Huscarls alone. The terrain underfoot is shown as broken ground but flat. What does this tell us? It tells us that the knights had the height advantage - things didn't a...
