Computer clubs/workshops?

Postby moonjiver » Sun Jul 06, 2014 10:55 am

Great website and fascinating forum, full of useful stuff and seems a great place for networking. But you don't seem to have much on computers, like a section for raising issues, and there don't seem to be workshops or drop-ins in Hastings - does anyone know of anywhere useful?

I'm an oldie writer but I came to computers late and, tho I'm quite good on using a computer, I'm no good on the problems!. I got a nice laptop last year but so many issues and difficulty finding help with it that it just ended up sitting in a cupboard. I got let down by some would-be helpers, once or twice I was quoted £30 an hour by computer guys - I just gave up! Does anyone know where I could get some honest advice and help? Haven't even connected to internet yet - not good!

Hello Moonjiver and welcome to the forum.
We did have a guy on here at one point that didn't mind giving some helpful advice for people and their PC issues. I will try to fish out the old posts and see if we can contact him. It might even be worth starting a new section of the forum for computer chat and advice?

Perhaps the best idea I've heard in quite some time !!
not being able to connect to the internet sounds very frustrating and ordinary desktop PC's are cheap as chips on eBay.
Whatever problems you are having there is a solution not far away.

Richard, do you remember who it was? If we can find the topic on the forum I should be able to make contact with him.

Libraries are often quite good for computer help. Might be worth asking there. :)

Thanks very much, I wasn't expecting such welcoming and helpful responses. Besides my (inactive) laptop, I use a good HTC phone - great for internet but obviously I can't do proper work with files, images etc. on there. I also use the library computers but those are very slow and the software outdated. The staff are well-meaning but most don't seem to be well-trained in IT and twice I have been told "You know more than I do!"

I think the problem is that funding has dried up and the short basic courses and drop-ins which I used to find helpful aren't around now. It would be good if someone could spare just a bit of time for a little computer club somewhere - bit like the bike workshop on the prom at St Leonard's every week! Of course I know about computers to some extent and would be happy to help some struggling beginner - if someone more intelligent could help me with my issues!

Some ideas there, don't you think? At the least, it would be useful if the thread could be developed into a chat-spot for computer problems and a contact place.

I have retrieved KMT's details from the old forum and sent him an email. If he decides he would like to help then we shall have a new section for computer help and see how it goes.

Hello, I will be moving to Hastings at the end of July/Early August, I am currently in the process of purchasing a property on Dane Road.

I am a computer technician and hobbyist computer programmer. I offer a no-fix-no-fee service, with a pickup/drop-off option at very reasonable rates.

If you need some advice, I am willing to offer this for free.
