I think I have it, or as close as I'll get. This clipping is from the Hastings & St. Leonards Observer dated 18th April 1874. It details the death of Edward Edwards. It is almost certainly the right man as his name, age and address match.

1874.05.18 death Edward Edwards 1809.jpg

Rope maker was certainly a marine occupation in those days. Perhaps the census enumerator was being lazy, or didn't correctly hear the occupation when given to him.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions.

Very interesting to be able to trace a close relative that far back Derek.
As far as Thwaites & Winter shipbuilders being reported in a Brighton paper, it seems that major ship building industry was operating in Shoreham (to the west of Brighton) from times immemorial and that firm may have been operating there at one time, under a different partnership.
Quays would have been provided in Brighton for ships built in Shoreham.

Hastings ceased being a trading port (as opposed to a fishing industry) by around 1866 and the Customs House was abandoned at around that date.
The last such building, built in 1853, was owned by Hastings Council and stood on the beach-side of East Parade, just east of the Cutter pub. It was washed away by a gale in August 1881 and a new lifeboat house was built on its site in 1882.

The Sussex newspapers going back to the early 1800s are on the various family history websites. Whilst undertaking some research for a friend I was able to unearth that one of his ancestors proposed a toast to the then Queen Vic at a banquet held in Lewes in 1837 put on to celebrate her coronation. In 1 WW every week the HO published photos of men who were serving. I found photos of his 6 uncles all together, all of whom survived. One of my own ancestors was fished from the sea when he got into difficulties swimming

Many years ago when I lived in Hastings it was a pleasure to ask at the library for the original bound back copies of the Observer and leaf through the pages reading all sorts of news. Whilst working at Marriotts we were regularly asked to copy various articles from the bound volumes which we did using a flat bed camera. Unfortunately they no longer allow the originals to be handled

Those happy discoveries are electrifying when you realise what you are looking at. A few years back I found a newspaper report and photograph featuring my grandfather together with most of his brothers and most of them in uniform in the early years of WW1.
