Recycling in Schools

Postby Geoff » Tue Mar 10, 2009 9:07 pm

I am very suprised to hear from my daughter today that they don't recycle in the school.

Surely that's not right. They have had lessons on the importance of recycling but don't actually do it themselves???

Sounds a bit strange to me!

Can anyone confirm this is or isn't the case?

William Parker have only just introduced some recycling scheme, simply two seperate bins in each classroom, one for your school junk, confiscated food etc ;-) and one for recycling.

Not sure about other schools in the area though.

Well i'm astonished. Schools must be a massive user of paper, and yet they have only just thought about recycling any of it. How bad is that? Seems my daughter must be right about Little Ridge, apparently it's too expensive to have it carted away :(

Same at Castledown. We throw loads of paper away, again i think it's down to costs. It is a shame when households are encouraged to recycle yet places such as schools are not.
Maybe someone could write to the council about getting the charges reduced or cut all together. There are enough recycling trucks going past these schools everyday so seems they are missing a great way to boost their recycling percentages and surely it will encourage the kids to think more about what they are throwing away when they are at home.

Yup i've probably wasted and thrown away so much paper over the years during art and graphics lessons, I almost feel guilty ;) But seriously during my 13 years of education i don't think i've ever had some recycling awareness lesson or something along those lines.
Also, if other schools in the area don't recycle because of the costs, like Geoff mentioned with Little Ridge, than maybe the council should be working with schools about this issue, seeing as more councils seem to be getting more picky about what goes in what bin.
