Today on R4

Postby Olly » Mon Feb 17, 2014 8:19 am

has just reported that The Chancellor, George Osborne (yes, even thought he's been doing it for nearly 5 years the BBC still reminds us what his name is!! :erm: ) that if Salmond has his way, and the new Scottish economy crashes and burns, it wouldn't be fair to the British taxpayer if they have to bail them out. With Osborne in the driving seat I reckon it'll be the other way around, and Salmond will be bailing us out!

I think it will cause more wrangling and bitter fighting over money than ever before as, even after discounting the North Sea Oil, Scotland is still in net receipt of money from Westminster and will have to raise taxes or reduce expenditure to manage a truly independent economy.
Then there is Scotlands' share of the national debt which Salmond has said that he will renege on if he is not allowed to keep the pound sterling.

I think, at the end of the day, if this goes ahead without agreements betwen the two sides then one or the other will try to extract their "Pound of flesh"

Well to judge by the way the '3 stooges' are joining forces to gang up on him, he must be on to a good thing for Scotland but not for England. Good luck to 'em, say I - the sooner they cast themselves adrift the better!

Salmond seems to want independence in name only while keeping the NHS and defence, EU membership and the pound sterling.
It seems to stand to reason that If they want the Pound they've to accept monetary policy and fiscal restraint set by London.
So Salmond's plans seem ill-conceived and nonsensical.

I'm not sure a majority of Scots are entirely gullible_ _ _

Why should it matter to us though? I can't think of a reason - although if it means that all Scotsmen have to be repatriated, that would be a good one!
