Britain has had its 'Trump moment' whereby bombast, lying, fake news rules the day, it remains to be seen what Johnson and his team can do to harm the lives of ordinary families and especially minority groups including the disabled with the discredited UC regime, and we wait eagerly for 20k more police 35k more nurses and all those hospitals

Hastings has proven it is the place of the Ragged Trousered Philanthropists - again

Ha ha! Was thinking something similar about Colin. I think someone ought to go round there with a warm blanket, brandy flask, possibly some oxygen ..

My God, what a night! I rather felt that the confused manoeuvring of Labour over Brexit plus the Corbyn absence of leadership was creating a lot of frustration amongst the electorate, must have some big repercussions in the vote. All the other extravagant manifesto promises were not believed and became largely ignored. In the event, it seems like a volcanic rejection of Corbynism - out of tune with the mood of the country and out of touch with what people really want.

So, went to bed with an easier mind. There will hopefully be a lessening of the extreme left-wing madness - it won't end overnight, because now there is likely to be a massive civil war within the Labour party between the Momentum-inspired movement and the moderate, more centrist traditional Labourites. Labour has an unenviable problem ahead, in re-assessing what it stands for and how to connect again with the electorate.

Did you see Jon Lansman on the television last night?
More to the point have you ever seen Colin and Lansman
at the same time? Makes you think.

As regards Labour reassessing - I agree they have a very difficult task ahead. It is painfully obvious to everyone that an ultra-left-wing party can never gain power in this country. Go back to the Blair type of Labour? I don't think so - that snake-oil salesman fooled a lot of people but, once bitten twice shy.
I cannot honestly see Labour ever being in power again except through a coalition. The two types of labour i mention above don't seem to cut it now and if you add to that they have lost Scotland and are fast losing Wales they are getting less and less relevant.
Not happy about it really - we do not want a one party state in this country.

Well It is good that labour is not an ulrta left party by all comparison to our European and similar democratic nations comparators. We have been through all this before but you are unable to define unltra left by comparison to the 1945 or 1964 programmes, albeit modernised to take account of the modern world and different industries.

You are welcome to try again bu I expect readers are bored of your posturing and then unable to comeup with details to support your exagerrated claims.

Hi Colin - I too have taken drink this evening so I will not nitpick on typos but you are right about boring the readers. They must be as bored with me as I am with you. I am going to by-pass your posts for a while as all this conversation is very, very circular.
But I will leave you with one thought - NEXT TIME the people will believe that Socialism is the answer . But if Socialism is the answer what the hell could the question have been?

I am not at all interested in how Labour compares to other left-wing parties in Europe or how its policies compare to those of 1945 or 1964 etc. All this is old history and epitomises the problem Labour currently have - there is an inability to focus on the here and now and the vital issues which the electorate are truly anxious about. Instead of on idealistic nonsense.

Being out of tune with the public's mood and, so far, being in denial about the real reasons for losing the election, are the reasons Labour have a big problem. It is indeed difficult to see how Labour can be seen as a serious contender for power unless it reconnects with the electorate and in particular the middle-ground of voters.

The Brighton candidate, who won the town for Labour, made a passionate declaration, something like "they would carry on the fight in the Commons, in the courts, in the streets etc." - that is precisely the sort of aggressive, confrontational leftist attitude which the voters loudly demonstrated they did not want. Until Labour does some navel-gazing and stops blaming everyone else for the defeat, they will wait a long time to make a comeback.

By comparing European parties I was merely countering your assertions of Labour policies being somehow beyond the pail. If you don't want debate then you should be somewhere else.

You cite Russell-Moyle. Protest and the use of courts and parliament are how society develops and changes, from the Tolpuddle Martyrs through to the Suffragettes and beyond. But for the Suffragettes you would not have the vote. That is an interesting observation.
