You sounded a little acid-tongued about my reply to your sugar query seahermit.
Remember the simple rule of thumb - if something bothers you then don't do it or at least try to cut down a little. This is just commonsense.
If you asked a doctor the question they would probably say the same - avoid too much sugar and there could be many reasons for your intolerance.
As we age the body often becomes less tolerant of certain substances.
Even allergic reactions can have different degrees of severity - pollen sufferers feel much worse when the levels are really high but may just feel uncomfortable at lower levels.
Nothing is black or white.
The effects of a true allergy (pollen, gluten and latex and many others) can range from mild to life-threatening
Also remember the old Greek maxim: A poison is defined by its dosage.
Paracelsus coined his famous dictum, “What is there that is not poison? All things are poison and nothing is without poison. Solely the dose determines that a thing is not a poison,”
As for your particular query, seahermit, the problem may be a microbial imbalance in the gut with an overgrowth of yeast. Since yeast feeds on sugars, it could exacerbate the problem, causing symptoms like skin rashes and puffiness.
You sound to have a sugar intolerance (but probably not to all sugar types, of which there are several).
Just like gluten intolerance you will be able to consume small amounts with no clear signs of trouble.
Intolerance is usually gut-related in some way whereas allergies are antibody-related but both may elicit varying degrees of reaction in the individual, depending on a number of circumstances.

Re: Gluten-Free
I am not a medical specialist and am not the slightest bit interested in all the complicated details of how the digestive system works (or doesn't). You seem to have the time to waffle on at great length and show off your half-formed knowledge - good luck to you. I'm sorry, I have more important things to do.
I cannot see myself contributing much more to this forum - it is supposed to be mainly a discussion site about Hastings. It has become very much a one-man personal soap box and it is noticeable that other contributors seem to be largely disinterested and absent ...

Re: Gluten-Free
seahermit - you mainly want to use the forum as a place to rant and rave about what is wrong with Hastings, posting arguments that are both feeble and shallow.
You ask questions and don't want to know the details - I rest my case.
