National Lockdown

Postby Richard » Sun Jan 03, 2021 7:15 pm

Shut the whole country down for a month, no school, colleges or similar.
No fast food/takeaways of any kind.
No property viewing.
No travel unless medical/essential.
No air-conditioning/air circulation fans permitted anywhere.
No vehicle (car, bus, coach, train or plane travel).
We are still too relaxed.
An additional package of welfare and economic support will also be needed.

Review the situation after a month and hope the vaccine programme kicks in soon.

Take away / fast food deliveries will still continue and my employer told me I still have to go into the office tomorrow as they consider the IT service I provide to be "essential".

Car travel should still be fine for most sensible purposes and trains are still running - well they better be or I won't be able to get into London to work LOL.

Overall the lockdown is not as strict as the first time around , and there are so many people willingly flouting the guidelines with impunity that it won't be making as big an impact as in needs to be.

The plumber, electrician and window specialist I have working on my flat are all still working in spite of the lockdown as they cannot work from home. We are only letting one service supplier work in the flat at any time and we are dealing with questions via video call.

I don't know if the building material deliveries I have scheduled for this week will happen now, but I suspect they will still continue.

Unfortunately it looks like the third wave of the virus is going to be large and long as the measures are too lightweight to make as much of an impact as needed.

Bring on the vaccine and let's hope the virus doesn't mutate to beat it before it reaches critical mass.

Now that we have a vaccine, once it can be rolled out sufficiently, it should be administered just as before, dependent upon age-group and vulnerability.
If we had no vaccine for the typical seasonal flu, that has been around for many years, we would see far more deaths, but even seasonal flu mutates enough to require new vaccines each year and even then some still manages to spread and attack.
If covid mutates sufficient to defeat the current vaccine then we are going to have to play catch-up, but history relates that it will certainly do so eventually.
It depends on how fast it mutates into a vaccine-resistant form and how quickly it spreads.

The government are, of course, between Scylla and Charybdis, closing down a lot of businesses and paying out grants by endless borrowing.
Businesses may have workers in areas such as payroll, tax, banking etcetera, who can work from home, yet still have offices to maintain and run, with computer servers and other repair issues which require a physical presence.
The media are in a feeding-frenzy pushing out headline-grabbing news of relentless misery and the public are becoming rather weary of it all.
