I am French and I have decided to leave London and move to St Leonards. Now the question is: how is the job market around ? Since I can speak several languages (English, French, German and Russian), I sincerely believed that it would help. But reading all the old posts about the job market, I am no more sure about it. ? Any ideas ? And any ideas how I should go about it ?

Re: Multilingual jobs
The job market in Hastings is not very good and I cannot think of any companies that would need your languages. With all those languages you could earn very good money in a big city, particularly London where there are companies that do business internationally. Hastings is a small town, your languages would be more in demand in a big city.

Thank you Movingsouth. I have tried agencies in London, but in vain. It seems that companies want people with work experience in the UK, which is not my case, except as a teacher of French.
Re: Multilingual jobs
Hastings has plenty of Language schools so your skills may well be in demand. Personally don't think the job market is much worse in Hastings than anywhere else in the country. Just depends exactly what type of job you are looking for. Due to the recession it is hard to find a full time job on a permanent contract but that is a countrywide problem. My wife recently got a 20+ hour job without too much problem. Good luck there are jobs out there, it's not all doom and gloom.

Hi DuncanB
Out of interest how did your wife find her job and what type of work is it? Just interested as both myself and my partner are finding the job situation difficult. He has a Phd and I've been working as a finance assistant, although I'm willing to do pretty much anything. We usually use job sites like Indeed, the job centre, friday ads etc. Any other good places to look for local jobs that you can suggest?

Re: Multilingual jobs
Hi duncan b, I would be very interested to know too please as I have tried all the main websites and companies and there is not much out there at all. And there is definately a significant difference compared to the jobs market in London there has to be as hastings is a tiny village compared to the vast number of employers in london. There may be language schools but you need qualifications to teach. As one of the other posts says a lot of people are coming from abroad with false promises of work and ending up homeless and sleeping on the streets and beaches in the freezing cold, unfortunately this is something I see every day and it is very sad..
Re: Multilingual jobs
What about setting then a company ? I did that in Germany, and it was fun and at the same time a lot of work. If there is no job, then may be we should create our own. So I have a solid background as a translator and interpreter. I would need to associate (?) myself with someone good with laws and finance, another (or the same) person good at contacting firms and selling us, another one good at getting new contracts and ideas, etc. All around foreign languages. If there are tourists, they may want guides, translations, etc. If there are firms, they might want to attract foreign clients, etc.
What about it? Actually, I do not want to work in my own room with contacts solely on the phone. I want to earn money but meet other people. Yep!
