Anyone having email problems with Nokias?

Microsoft, having bought up the mobile phone division of Nokia, have just ended the email facility on many Nokia models, mainly non-touchscreen phones (they have posted statements about it online). For me it's quite a disaster because I often leave my HTC smartphone at home and take out my small handy Nokia - just for calls and checking emails. But using the email menu, or downloading the email applications of Yahoo, Gmail etc. no longer works on the Nokia and going to the Yahoo or Google website and trying to log-in that way also fails.

Anyone have any thoughts? It has increased my cynicism about big companies which hold near-monopolies and can do as they please, presumably the hope is to push customers towards buying the more modern phones with Windows software. But am I understanding this correctly? I can hardly believe that the basic Nokias, plenty in the shops still, have suddenly been rendered half useless - good only for phone calls by grannie!

So far I have been into one mobile phone shop and the "advisor" knew less than I did, failed completely to set up email again on my Nokia, had no ideas how to get round it ...

from what I can see:
It is the Nokia Messaging Service (aka. NMS). Devices which made use of NMS to send and receive emails will stop syncing the mailboxes starting November 17th as Microsoft decides to kill the service. However, the kill doesn’t affect all existing Nokia phones equally.
The Mail app will become completely useless on the Nokia Asha and Series 40 devices starting November 17th as it will fail to sync with the mailbox and fetch or send any new mails. Users however will be able to access their mailboxes using the web interface of their mail providers, but that isn’t as easy and quickly accessible as was the Mail app.

I still can't quite take it in that MS have got away with doing this largely without warning - there were some complaints and discussion on the internet but I would have expected a storm of protest! My Nokia was bought only 18 months ago, suddenly rendered half-obsolete. There must be many thousands of people in my position.

There are some good technical guys in the Three shop, Carphone is not bad too. There doesn't seem to be any way round it. Trying to log-in to email on the Yahoo website doesn't work - something in the Nokia software is blocking you from working with email.

I have ended up moving to a Samsung Galaxy Young - really nice little pocket-sized phone which is quite powerful for a budget phone. Later I am still planning to pick up a large-screen mobile (for my films etc.), although the budget tablets are now so cheap that I might tempted in that direction! And on Wi-Fi rather cheaper to run ..

Sorry, you've lost me for now. Are you meaning about the little Samsung phone?

I didn't at all mean to fork out and step back to another small phone, but I do like to carry around a convenient pocket-sized device acnd so far this small phone seems excellent. Bit fiddly to begin with (you get used to anything eventually!) but works beautifully.

Yes, the Samsung Young, although that seems designed for kids really.

Is that the best sub-£100 phone on the market?

Huawei (Vodafone-locked) Ascend G300 seems interesting, as does
Huawei Blaze.

I decided I wanted a really small phone - the only other serious contender was an LG, 3" screen, but I don't know much about LGs. The Samsung Galaxy Young has a 3.3" screen, very good reviews on the internet. I looked at the Huawei phone, rather cheaper, but decided to play safe with a better-known brand!

The "Young" business is just a marketing name really, it's quite an advanced phone, good for anyone. Carphone have it for £74 but on their website it's £60. So I phoned their warehouse and ordered it for that price - it arrived about 10 am next day! I've ordered things from Carphone before, it's cheaper and the service excellent.

"Black Friday" tomorrow in the stores - some ads I've seen actually said 50 per cent reductions (probably on items few people want!). I suspect I'll find a bit of time to nose around and check the prices on one or two items ..

Well, this story ends badly .. has unexpectedly become a "salutary tale" for any prospective mobile phone purchasers!

I did all the right things, did a lot of research and ended up buying a small Samsung Galaxy Young phone. Very nice-looking, quite advanced, but nowhere at all did I come across any mention of problems downloading videos, films etc. (nor did the shop say a word). However, the phone ain't up to it .. The BBC I-Player doesn't work, blacked-out screen and the only sound you get is a series of squeaks. So I went into BBC and other websites and there is a great deal of info there. A number of Android phones have a bug in their software which either blocks I-player completely or results in a very poor and interrupted download experience. Some top of the range phones are at fault, even an expensive Google Nexus tablet, and the problem's been going on for atleast a year!

I'm back with my HTC Desire S, outstanding phone, solidly built and nothing it can't do. Typing etc. is also smooth and effortless, compared with the Samsung's slight clunkiness. Back to the shop goes the Samsung and there will of course be some arguing. I'm not sure at the moment how strong my case is for return or exchange, but this Samsung has overall performed worse than my last three mobiles.

For anyone bored enough to be reading this, a fairly satisfactory postscript to my mobile hassles!

I have now gone the other way, upgraded to an HTC Desire 610 instead of trying to find a good small phone. It seems huge, but still goes into a pocket ok and a beautiful phone - typing and working with images are a new experience. All makes life easier ..
