My neighbour's son, Paul, was woken up at 4am by Police recently, they had been passing by his house and noticed an open window with a chair still beneath and he soon discovered his wallet, mobile and computer had been stolen.
Paul phoned a friend and gave him his mobile tracking number and told them to do a search on their computer, which they did and he was able to phone the Police with an address which resulted in the capture of criminals, who also had a string of previous convictions.
Paul was delighted to be re-united with his 'gear' and the Police were very happy as they manage to catch someone responsible for a string of thefts.
I don't believe the Police normally bother to do this sort of thing proactively but when presented with the information, at first hand, then they may be more co-operative.

Catching Thieves by Mobile Tracking
Re: Catching Thieves by Mobile Tracking
Are there any police still in this area? I never see them!!
However, a fascinating "textbook" story of how things should ideally happen. I'm thinking of going unto the relevant settings on my mobile, quite easy I think. Do you know if it is as straightforward to set up tracking on a laptop in case it gets stolen?

not sure but it seems possible, but the following link seems to suggest it requires Police permission in the first place:
