Yes, I was thinking all of that. It never made sense to me to be able to email only from your own pc, webmail was obviously so much more convenient and ubiquitous. Apart from the fact that Hotmail for years was notorious for its bugs and flaws, everyone advised me to keep away from it, far less secure than Gmail. Is Live Mail better these days?
And it's incredible that MS doesn't test its own products thoroughly - if they didn't hold the monopoly and their profits were being seriously challenged. by other software developers, they'd go to much more trouble!

Re: Windows 10 first impressions
All I can say is, agh!. Why do they have to keep changing systems every few months, for what often seems little advantage and a lot of agro, at least initially.
And I had already ordered a free upgrade before reading this.
If you don't hear from me for a long time you will know why............

Re: Windows 10 first impressions
Like a Lemming I decided to take the plunge.
After a few false starts I got the go-ahead and started installing the Windows 10 but it took nearly two hours.
Once installedThe screen started to flash on and off, i.e. the desktop and all the icons kept reloading and I could do no work except for brief periods between the flashing.
There is a simple fix
Open task manager ... under file (top left) "Run new task" ... type msconfig. In the new box that opens (it may be behind the task manager box) go to Service Tab .... Scroll until you find 2 tasks that need to be stopped ... (1) Problem Reports and Solution Control Panel Support .... (2) Windows Error Report Service.... Disable these by unchecking .... Click Apply ... Click OK ... If you are prompted to restart, then restart computer .....
This is the main issue causing the screen to blink . .. Ironic that the items causing the errors are the solutions designed to report errors to microsoft.
Now things are stable but I am not too impressed by this 'bug'.

Re: Windows 10 first impressions
Thanks for sharing Richard, sounds like another case of MS not fully testing before release.
I just took the plunge on my second PC and everything went smoothly this time. Phew!

Re: Windows 10 first impressions
Still having flashing screen and icons problems - may revert to Windows 7.
It would be helpful if Win 10 had an obvious way for restoring or undoing the installation.
Others report flashing screen issues owing to icloud Apple or graphics card issues.
or I could just buy a Tesco Tablet (which is supposed to be basic but reasonable) and try again.
double grrrrrrr!!!

Re: Windows 10 first impressions
Sounds like quite a common issue (yet another one) with the flashing screen thing.
Have you looked through this? http://wind8apps.com/screen-flashes-windows-10/
A tablet is no replacement for a proper PC but the Tesco Hudle2 is well rated for the price. Perhaps we should discuss tablets on a separate thread?

Back to Win 7 'ultimate' now, I can't be doing with 'Disco-Windows 10' anymore.
Not sure I'm missing all that much anyway.

Re: Windows 10 first impressions
Thanks Richard. You've made me feel a lot better about not being able to upgrade to Windows 10.
Re: Windows 10 first impressions
Scared the life out me all these problems! Definitely not thinking about any upgrade to Windows 10 for now.
Richard, when you at first thought you had solved the flashing lights, how did you find out about the fix via the Task Manager menu? Presumably the other problems with graphics cards etc. are all reported online.

Re: Windows 10 first impressions
The browser window was fairly stable but the flashing desktop underneath impeded typing into google during the periods it was cycling the icons on and off and blacking the screen out below.
Some short intervals were enough to type queries into google, nonetheless.
I may go back one day when the bugs have been fixed or even try another O.S. altogether perhaps, there are many different Linux systems out there.
Or just get a new computer one day on eBay, with better specs, Win 10 loaded and working, as they seem cheap now.
