Still not got anywhere on that one (win 10 disk lock-down) but I have managed to revive a similarly 'frozen' vintage Win XP disk drive by going into Bios settings that allowed me to switch from SATA to AHCI and 'hey presto' the old system is now working happily, despite all manner of dire 'stop-code' warnings previously about HDD errors and attempting to set read-only to allow disk-checking (which failed to work).
