Richard raised a question about the black and white wing markings, this was a special "secret" identification intended to make "friend or foe" visual i.d. very quick on the day!

The Normandy landings, codenamed "Operation Neptune", were the landing operations on 6 June 1944 (termed D-Day)
Perhaps derived from 'Norman-D-day'.
For that specific day "Invasion stripes" were painted on planes to identify them quickly but the side-effect was that they were easily identified by the enemy too and so they were very quickly removed after that day.
