Hi Apologies if there is already a posting about this topic i had a look but couldn't see anything. I have a couple of rooms that I would like to rent out short term to foreign language students. Has anybody done this before and can offer advice? Which are the best schools to approach? what is the going rate? what is the typical length of stay? age group?? any other advice, Thanks!!!

Foreign students -host families
Re: Foreign students -host families
Hi, I had foreign students last year and the year before, but am not having them this year.
EAC is an okay school to get students from. They pay GBP80 per week for a shared room I think. Two to a room maximum. Single rooms were GBP92 per week (I think). I had two students sharing a room last year and each student was here for three weeks. Others were here for two. I had a totsl of six over the summer. Pinelands is okay too but you need to do a packed lunch each day for their students.

Thanks so much Sharon, that's really useful information. How old were the students? were they fairly responsible? Also does the school pay you or do the students pay you direct? Thanks again.
Re: Foreign students -host families
I had young students one year from Poland, Uzbekistan and Germany. They all took liberties with home coming times and the 14-year-olds had obtained a bottle of wine for their last night here.
The school specified staying home from 8 pm but the older teenagers did not naturally stick to this rule: I ended up often driving around Hastings nightclubs looking for them. The Uzbeck boy ran a huge bill phoning home from the house phone and was very fineky about the food. Instead he seemed to live on cola and sweets. He was also complaining all the time about having to stay with me, but once moved to an another house he was begging to come back.
I also had adult language students who were fine. Well, one young adult complained of being too far away from the centre (15 min walk) and took a taxi every day.
They all came from the same language school but sorry, I cannot remember which one it was.

Thanks so much for the feedback. Sounds like maybe it's easier with Adults. Again lots of food for thought.

Hi. I work for a language school if you want to give us a call_ _ _01424 712000. We have adults all year round and juniors summer only_ _ _.if that helps.
Re: Foreign students -host families
Whoops, I am so sorry for the late reply, I have only just seen this. Over the past two years we have had both adults (oldest 23yrs) and juniors (youngest 12yrs) and we haven't really had any problems with any of them, although we did have a 15yr old Russian girl last summer that seemed to think that an 11pm curfew meant leaving the venue at 11pm!! I did have a few problems with that as I have school age children that had to get up in the morning.
If you have juniors they are not allowed out at night apart from school organised venues, but you may have to take them there and pick them up.
If students didn't eat what we ate they went without or buy something when they went out. Although it was only the Russian girl that had an appetite of a bird lol. Not really had any problems with foreign students and have quite enjoyed them over the past two years. The only reason we're not having them this year is because we have alot of renovating/decorating going on at the moment.
BTW Last years students earnings which amounted to GBP1200 paid for our rather large decking area we had built at the end of the summer :w00t: The six weeks inconvenience of strangers under your roof does pay off in the end
