What do/did you do for work?

Postby jules » Wed Jul 03, 2013 6:39 pm

I was just looking at a thread on another part of the forum regarding the lack of available/alleged work around and about - and it led me to wonder what you all do. Don't want to be too nosey, you can be as vague as you wish!

I just wondered that's all - as a potential incomer to Hastings, I get the impression (rightly or wrongly) that it is either arty types that work from home or sell from bijou shops, or caring type professions.

I often wonder how some of the people featured in the 'lifestyle' type magazines afford their envy inducing houses; after all surely there's only so many dotty clothes pegs and retro stuff one can sell? (Yes I am jealous ;) )

I'll start: I work for a London local authority, mostly in a housing/finance capacity, about halfway up the greasy pole, but steady and hopefully secure (until the next round of cuts that is)

What about everyone else?

I was talking about this with a friend recently. I was wondering about galleries and shops that open that can't be taking much money. He said lots of them are owned by women who have partners that have good jobs and work in London. Also I think quite a few people in Hastings move here when they have made quite a bit of money and can live relatively cheaply.

Me and my partner have found it difficult to find work. He was working at a local charity but they are about to run out of funding so he is now having to work in London. I've just started a new job, it's a step down for me but is a fun job and something I'm interested in. Just a same OH is going to be in London all week :(

Is your OH going to commute or stay in London during the week? Is your new job local? Good for you for getting something you will enjoy.

:)

I daresay the common sense approach for us would be to wait a while before moving down, but I want to try and enjoy everything Hastings has to offer whilst I still have the legs!

He's going to be staying up in London during the week. It probably doesn't work out much more expensive than getting the train everyday.

We really like living here, so don't want to move back up to London to live. Although we love London, the property is just too expensive and we feel like St Leonards is a great place to live.

My job is local, it 10-15 mins walk from home.

One thing about Hastings is people seem to get work through contacts and people they know. A couple of the guys I work with are part time and they also have a couple of other jobs as well.

I worked most of my life in health care in Hastings . I have seen the decline thanks to previous local governements who fritter money on bowls pavillions . Now the politics has changed and Hastings and St leonards are improving , look around Kings Road , i know its contreversial but the Jerwood gallery will only benefit Hastings

I agree, having worked on a renewal area in one of the most deprived areas in London, I was very cynical - but 5 years on, it has worked. All the arty farty stuff has attracted other arty farty people with businesses, who do employ local people and other local people use the new businesses. Mind you, I got flamed when I aired this opinion on here as a relative newcomer  It actually put me off contributing to the forum for quite a while. :S Hopefully it will give people who live locally the chance to branch out and do something other than the meagre selection of jobs there appears to be at the moment.
