Gluten-free fish and chips

Does anyone know of a fish and chip restaurant or takeaway in the area that does gluten-free fish and chips?

Eastbourne is the nearest place I can find that does cater for gluten free fish and chips.

How does that work? Surely the oil used for batter will be contaminated with gluten, or the oil it'self will contain gluten? I'm interested as our Son used to have coeliac disease, up to the age of 16, then he had cancer, and after chemo, he discovered he wasn't allergic to gluten any more.
Also, people with coeliac disease are more likely to have Protein S deficiency, a blood clotting disorder.

Yes, to be truly gluten free you have to have a separate kitchen. I work in a cafe and we sell gluten free food but have a disclaimer saying 'that the food contains no gluten ingredients'. We can't guarantee there hasn't been cross contamination.

Most people who are avoiding gluten aren't coeliacs they are just avoiding gluten for health reasons.

It entails not only having gluten-free batter and gluten-free (non-flour-coated) chips but also avoiding gluten contamination. So they cannot use the same fryer that has been used to fry regular fish and chips. But some chip shops do manage to serve gluten-free meals. A few of them have the batter and a separate fryer ready to go and thus can supply gluten-free meals on demand. But most require an hours notice because they have to clean out a fryer and put fresh oil in. Ive found places serving GF fish and chips in other towns but recently moved here and havent found one yet. By the way, oils do not contain gluten. Interesting story about your son. I hope he is well now.

He is well at the moment, however, the Non Hodgkins Lymphoma returned aggressively 3 years later at 19. He had different treatment, stem cell transplants. The cells were harvested from his blood, lucky, as not everyone can do that. He then had very aggressive chemo, and then his stem cells were given back, this helps recovery.
He is continuing his Engineering degree at Coventry Uni, and is now 21. A very brave chap. Still free from coeliac disease though!
