Bayeux Tapestry

Postby Gerry Glyde » Sat Mar 18, 2017 10:41 am

I am treating myself to see the Tapestry next month. This is another thing that the French (Normans ) have stolen from us. It was reputedly worked by monks from Canterbury presumably St Augustine's Abbey, so perhaps it should be called the Canterbury Tapestry.
This is another grievance against the French! :D

Somewhere I have a complete set of postcards depicting the tapestry. Always meant to get them uploaded to the gallery. Interested?

As for the French, I couldn't possibly comment ;)

The 'Tapestry' may well have been woven in Kent since that was the power-base of Bishop 'Odo', made Earl of Kent in 1067 (he was the half-brother of William's mother) he owned the Cathedral of Bayeux, where it was always displayed.

Not sure whether I have mentioned this before - but will
say it anyway. I saw a copy of the tapestry on my first
visit to Hastings in 1966.
Some years ago we were on holiday in France and went to
see the original. We had a bit of a queue and then took a while
look over the tapestry......it was only when we had 'finished'
that we discovered we had seen the copy (again) and the original
was in a different room/floor, with a very long queue.
Didn't bother - not sure whether that was out of fatigue or
embarrassment

That's a shame CBE, though I am informed the "copy" is very true to the original. Probably better as regards clarity as it's newer.

I have never seen either in real life unfortunately.

It was brilliant to see the original Tapestry at Bayeux over the Easter holiday. It is in a permanent display site and the museum has a lot of historical interpretation material in the building. It was busy when I visited but the queue as you went around in a line enabled you to look at the detail, along with the recorded commentary on a handset.

It was forbidden to take photos given the age of the item although the facsimile on the upper floor could be photographed. During the French Revolution some people thought it would be useful to cut up the cloth to cover some carts on the way to Paris. Luckily the monks prevented it. Adolf Hitler sent one of historians to examine it and it was on its way via Paris to Germany in August 1944 when the city fell to the Allies. Post war it was exhibited in Paris before returning to its permanent home.

I recommend a visit to anyone interested in history. Attached panel showing Harold in 1064 standing in between holy relics pledging allegiance to William to succeed Edward would die. Of course it could all be propaganda that the event took place at all!

Sounds amazing Colin. I would love to go myself and see it first hand. Thanks for reporting back about your visit.
