Hastings military base

Was there any sort of military presence in Hastings in the 1860's? I wonder if a relative of mine had a relationship with some fellow but did not marry him as I cannot find any record of such. A child is involved and no birth certificate or marriage license have come to light. Any ideas? Thank you. Mardell
