Cars, marbles & hygiene

Postby ColinL » Mon Aug 28, 2017 2:53 pm

When I was growing up in the late 50s, there were perhaps two or three motor vehicles on the street. We used to play marbles along the gutter, with a '1' or '2' or even up to a '6'. We were reasonably healthy apart from the usual childhood diseases most of which have now been eradicated due to vaccination and improved (?) diet. We would mess about in fields and woods and come home dirty, have a good wash in time for tea. I spent many hours out on the West Hill climbing the rocks and sometimes falling off.

Can you imagine now if a child, even if there was room to do so, play marbles? If they did then mum (not being sexist but it would probably be mum) would be running out every 15 minutes with yet another of those antiseptic or hygiene wipes of which there are many different kinds making sure the child had not picked up something. Yet the slightest bit of a cold or temperature and it is off to the Dr expecting that there will be a prescription in hand
