"The Slum By The Sea"

Hi. I'm moving to St Leonards tomorrow with my husband and kids but I'm a lttle worried because I've heard it is referred to as "the slum by the sea" because it is dirty, smelly, and has many many social problems.

I just wondered if there is any truth in this. I'm a bit worried that I might be bringing my children to one of the worst areas in the country!

Honest views in St Leonards greatly appreciated.

As I don't live in the area I don't know Shaffelnook, but have you been forced to move in a hurry? If I was going to move to an area I would like to check it out before moving.

Any area has good and bad reports, my daughter is at Nottingham University and we were told that it was the gun capital of England, she has had a lovely two years so far and we love the place when we go up to visit. Of course you will hear bad reports but you will also hear good ones. Give it a chance and make your own mind up. Let us all know what you think.

Good luck with the move and have a great time with those little ones, they grow up sooooo fast!!!

I'm probably not the best person to comment on this either, because as 'regular readrs' will know, I'm an ex Hastings resident who still has connections and family in town, but hasn't himself lived there for 20 years!!
I would, though, strongly recommend taht you read a few of the comments on this forum made by other people who have done as you have; I think you will find taht almost without exception they are positive and glad to have made the move. You certainly aren'ty bringing your family to one of the worst areas of Britain though; there are many, many worse places to live!!
Good luck with the move_ _ _

Well having lived in London all my life I am so glad that I moved my family to "The Slum by the Sea", everything is so much better. Don't listen to the twats that try to run this place down. What area doesn't have the problems you have mentioned, that's just society today. My children are far happier than they ever were in London. You will learn to love it here and it won't take long.

Well, this seems to be a regular topic here. Who knows if I am tempting fate but I lived in London before moving down to St Leonards and frankly I think St Leonards is great.

St Leonards has all the problems that every other area in the UK has but it also has some great advantages - you're by the sea and there is loads for the kids to do. The people are very welcoming and if you have kids it's a great way to meet people.

I certainly don't regret moving down here one bit - enjoy yourselves!!

Got to admit it does annoy me when Hastings and St Leonards is slated. There really is no good evidence that says it's any worse than the rest of the country and I am not alone to think the bad publicity is totally un-warranted.

Pretty much every comment on here from people that have made the move is positive, which must say something.

Just out of interest, where are you moving from? St Leonard's is a bit run down but definitely on the up. Shabby chic I think.

If everyone agrees then perhaps we could treat this as the last word on the subject! Viva St leonards!
