King Family

Postby Doreen » Wed May 18, 2011 2:57 pm

Does anyone know where Providence Cottage, Bentinck Place was in Hastings? My grandfather (James King, a policeman) and his family lived there, showing on the 1891 census. Thanks. :)

Providence Cottages and Bentinck Cottages were in Hollington Old Lane. This information was taken from the 1896 Pike's Directory.. it does not give the name of King in any of these cottages.. There was a Bentinck
Place in Battle Road, no KIng listed in these houses.. More than likely he had moved..

Thanks so much for taking the trouble to look. Yes they did move around quite a bit.

In the 1940's there was a Mr King who had stables next to the Smithy in Ore village ( now a CO-OP). This was adjacent to Providence Row ( long demolished)_ _ __ _ __ _ _thought it was worth a mention.

I too am trying to trace a King family with history in Hastings. In my case it is the sons and grandchildren of my Uncle John Henry King who was born in Belfast circa 1910, served in the Irish Guards during Second World War, was POW and thankfully on completion of his service went on to serve in I believe the Metropolitan Police and settle in Hastings. A very long time ago when my own father was alive we visited one of his sons called Brian. Another son who's name escapes me is meant to have emigrated to Australia at some point. Any help and or advice would be great thank you.

UPDATE: second son of John Edward (Jack) King was Peter and he left for Australia late 60's, maybe early 70's. Jacks first wife who sadly passed was Tess (possibly short for Theresa). Thanks all readers.

Hi, I think I might be part of the family you mention. I do not have many details of my father as my parents separated when I was very young. My father was John Anthony King son of John King and Ann Teressa Buckley (later known as Nana Rose, as she married a gentleman with the surname Rose) I know she was also known as Tess. My father had 2 brothers Brian King and Peter King. Only other things I know are my Grandparents married in Hampstead area in 1940.John was 22 and Ann was 20. John was listed as a Corporal in Irish Guards based at Wellington Barracks W1.
Address for Ann was 27 West End Lane NW6. Her father listed as Timothy Buckley (deceased) a Coal Miner (above ground). I know they also settled in Hastings and Peter was born here and Brian lived here. My father-John A King went to Australia around 1973 ish but did return. I have had no contact with him since then, but have heard he is no longer alive.
I would be very interested to hear from you, as I know very little about this side and it seems we might have a match here? Michelle
