Spice family

Postby Spice.180 » Thu Jun 05, 2014 8:54 pm

I am looking for any members of the Spice family that are left residing in the Hastings and St Leonard's areas. My great grandfather Owen Spice was born in St Leonard's and his family were carriage or fly drivers. He left Hastings in about 1910

There are several references to "Spice" (form street directories) as family names (about five, or so) as well as "Owen Spice" in the early 1900's.
Perhaps we can research which members of that family name appear more recently, but it may take some time.
Do you have any "Spice" names in particular to go on - or do we assume all "Spice's" are of that particular family group ?
This is rather interesting as I was not aware of that family or when it first appeared in Hastings/St. Leonards.

Owens dad was born in Kent but his grandfather lived in salehurst I think. In the 1871 census the family were living in st Mary Magdalene but in 1881 Owen went back to St Leonard's

I think you might try posting this question on the following website:

"Chris in 1066Land" is very knowledgeable but possibly you will need more names or locations to get you going.
there is a thread about 'Fly Drivers' or 'Coachmen' and mews at the following link:

sorry - you said those in Hastings today -

I thought of the phone book and then the Electoral Registers, the latter lists as follows 35 people with the surname of "Spice" :

This is via "find my past" which requires (free registration).

I can only imagine you intend to trace your family tree backwards, sometimes easier, apparently.

I do know a Jaquie KENT (née Spice) her husband's name is Denis, and as far as I know, they still live in the Hastings/St.Leonards area. Hope this helps !
