The Jerwood should do more to encourage tourists (and locals) in. (Events? Cheaper tickets? Parking discounts? Better opening hours? More interesting exhibitions? I don't know.) Then once the punters are at that end of town they will buy more fish and keep the fleet in business!

On a recent visit to Hastings I was relatively pleased to see that the building blends in colour with the Net huts although the sharp angles and box shape does appear a little overbearing. However if Hastings is serious in its bid for the city of culture then a variety of art outlets will be needed to establish the requirements for success. I am not a fan of modern art and saw that Jerwood is currently showing something similar to the pile of bricks that was exhibited at the Tate some years ago. I don't like it but many others will. If it brings in visitors and other investment then it will benefit the town in the long term

seem to be many online complaints about the rather full price to visitors of GBP7 (concs and children cheaper). But with nothing to capture the attention of kids.
The Cafe is often rated as expensive with cakes that are so poor they should change their supplier.
The 11am opening time is ridiculous and the cafe misses the brunch trade and the afternoon tea trade by closing at 4! and the actual 'Art', well that depends on your viewpoint but at least it can be varied from time to time.
The large space behind the gallery seems to be wasted and is left empty day and night, except for the occasional event.
The majority of local working-class folk with children will not visit, I suspect, as they do not generally have time for such intellectual entertainment, if that's what you should call it.

I really liked the online comment that complained about the untidy fishermen whose 'mess' could be seen through a window.

Speaking recently to somebody who works across the road from the Jerwood, I was told that, apart from a few weeks after it opened, she has never seen many people going in. Some days, she said, nobody goes in at all. I seem to remember that we were told that it would be so popular. Can't remember the numbers that they and the council said would be visiting it. Was it hundreds every week??
