If Hastings is the New Hanoi then St Lens must be Saigon - and there are parallels after all - remember Hanoi was the dowdy proletarian place while Saigon was vibrant liberal and arty - I propose immediate secession.

just trying to think of a parallel for Ore village
Re: what i think of my home town!!
I have been in Hastings for 2 years now and love it, for years I always made Hastings my holiday destination. And for anyone who disagrees, I would say live in Clacton for a while or better still Jaywick Sands which a short walk along the Clacton sea front. The worst place I have ever lived and no amount of money would ever make me want to go back there, not even for the weekend.
Re: what i think of my home town!!
Some of the posts make me wonder whether I'm living in a parallel universe_ _ _!
I moved down from North London to Warrior Square in November last year and I love it! Everyone I have met is friendly, kind, helpful and seem to have heaps of time to chat, tell me all the 'local' news and they even remember me the next time they see me too! (and no, I don't have mauve hair, or wear an eyepatch, or smell weird, or have any other traits which make me different from the 'norm'). Maybe a smile or being interested in the person you're talking to helps! If you scowl and ignore people, they'll treat you the same way.
The Square is gorgeous too, despite being told by one estate agent to avoid it like the plague. I haven't been happier in years and don't regret for one moment leaving London! They have crap Councils there too you know!!!
I'm having the time of my life_ _ _ perhaps anybody who isn't needs to seize the day and move away - of course, the grass is always greener_ _ _

I think we do need the tourism that makes its way here in droves each summer. The funny thing is that after meeting and getting to know many tourists that come back year after year, it has made me feel happier to live in hastings! Some of the visitors I have met have put me off ever going to thier town and I have also been counting the hours until they leave mine!
I have lived in St Leonards for fifteen years, coming from south east london. I would not say Hastings and St Leonards are worse then many other places, they are more diverse, granted. Those that try to act like we live in the ghetto, get over yourselves and start speaking up for and doing for you town, then maybe you will find it isnt so bad after all!

Hastings is not my home town, moved here nearly 10 years ago, I agree with dewi, the locals are only friendly to other locals probably born here. It is depressing, run down, and the s***iest town I have ever lived in, will be moving away from the area as soon as possible.

I moved here from Seattle, USA, five years ago. The locals are lovely to me, and indeed to everyone I know who has moved here, whether from within the UK or from elsewhere. I plan to spend the rest of my life in this beautiful and friendly little town.

I agree Gaz. I lived in Jaywick for a year and could'nt wait to get out. It's the third most deprived area in Great Britain. I then moved to Turkey which was full of animal abusers and perverts, then Blackpool, which was full of alcoholics and drug addicts. Am now trying out Hastings. So far so good. I'm too world weary and scint to move again. Well done for getting out of Jaywick.

Re: what i think of my home town!!
HI all just joined and have read thread with much interrest_ _ _I am moving to the Old Town in Spring and I have wanted to get back to Hastings for years_ _ _my father lived and worked there all my youth and my weekends and holidays were spent there_ _ _the rest of my time, up untill soon I hope, I have lived in Tonbridge_ _ _squeezed between HUGELY poncy Sevenoaks and extortionately expensive Tunbridge Wells..hence Tonbridge has become the uber ponce_ _ _it has to be one of the dullest places in the entire country_ _ _oozes middle class pretence and is a fab place to bring up spoilt children with ponies (of which I was one)_ _ _the town is old and quite picturesque and RICH, but its amounting wealth of commuters looking for country side aboads and middle class mothers in their Chelsea Tractors has made the place rather repellent to those like myself who want to feel "alive"_ _ _HASTINGS made my childhood a wonder and the place is very special in its own, perhaps slightly rough kind of way_ _ _
I am professional, with a degree and RHS qualifications and Hastings is calling me, I believe more people will choose to leave the rat race and move to this trully vibrant town and thus the outward migration of younsters maybe bouyed by the inward migration of professionals_ _ _its imperfections, make it perfect and I count the days to get back there, C

Re: what i think of my home town!!
As Much as I love the old hometown the local council do worry me at times.
The story in the observer re the council giving away 250,000 quid seems just a tad generous, I'm sure there must be more to the story? why are they doing it?
_ _ __ _ __ _ _..anyone got any more info?

Re: what i think of my home town!!
I was born in Hastings in 1955 and lived there until 1986. I still see it fairly often as I don't live too far away. I think a lot of people who complain bitterly about the town just haven't seen enough other places to make a fair comparison. Sure, it's got its problems with chavs, drugs, winos and so on _ _ _ pretty much everywhere has these days, but it's not that bad. It's fair to say that Hastings isn't what it used to be but, then again, it never has been.
