Here's a interesting article on the Jerwood

http://www.guardian.co.uk/artanddesign/ ... ade-review

I like the Jerwood and am looking forward to it opening. Having lived in Cornwall when they built the Tate in St Ives, it certainly made a difference to the image of Cornwall and increased the amount of visitors. It's now a busy destination all year round. Whether you consider that a good thing I don't know.

I certainly can't see it having a negative effect on the town. I don't know of any places in Britain that have been ruined by artists maybe you can illuminate me hanpet?

I'm 100% in favour too - though art isn't really my thing. To my way of thinking Jerwood had a massive choice of places - I believe Birmingham was second choice - but chose Hastings and have invested millions in our town already. Top class art gallery or coach park - a no-brainer, surely_ _ _

Possibly Roy - or maybe it's in line with typical visitor attraction admission prices given that Smugglers Adventure/Caves is GBP7.40, the Blue Reef Aquarium GBP8.20, and Bodiam Castle is also GBP7.00. The locals rate of GBP2.00 seems v. reasonable_ _ _.

I really can't decide on the merits, or otherwise, of the Jerwood_ _ _..

Tate St Ives is another kettle of proverbial - it's light coloured, spacious, up on a cliff top with a good view to the surfers below and panoramic in aspect

Jerwood is dark, ground hugging (to fit in with the net huts) almost black, minimalist and sinister somehow !!

It's not just Jerwood money either, as we all well know Hastings Council coughed up many millions of money to get this off the ground in partnership wth Jerwood (they attracted it to Hastings)

It's paradoxical to have a multi-million Arts complex in amongst a basically poor fishing area in Hastings which has traditionally been a typically working class holiday town

I am very interested in Art on many levels and may be hoping for great things but are the locals in Hastings likely to see the benefit is the main question_ _ _.
Time will tell !!

The Tate St Ives is a terrible space for showing art though, in my opinion. The best part is the gallery where you look out onto the beach. Cornwall used to be a working class holiday destination, I went there every year with my parents in the 70's. So I don't think the situation is that different.

GBP7 does seem a lot but as you say Peter , it's in line with other attractions and galleries. If you are coming down from London you are used to really amazing galleries for free, not sure how much longer that's going to be the case though.

Without arguing about the fantastic quality of light in St. Ives and it's Art Gallery, Cornwall was never a working-class holiday destination by any stretch of the imagination, couples went on Honeymoon and enjoyed the "Riviera"
I presume you don't mean Cornwall generally or do you?
I suppose you mean St Ives?
St Ives was made famous by world class Artists from the 1920's
Fishing was very important at one time but definitely no longer and so there isn't exactly anything 'working class' about it.

There are some Artists in Hastings but look at St. Ives, the whole place is stashed with Art in every window, nook and cranny !!
Hastings is more of a "Time Warp" and this is how it sees itself in my opinion

If Museums/Galleries are free in London then 'Hastings Art' exemplified (or otherwise) by The Jerwood will have to be spectacular to attract people to pay for the privelidge as well as travel

Does the Jerwood open tomorrow ????????

..and then there is that great long cafe with multicoloured chairs called something like "Eat at the Jerwood"
What a waste of space for showcasing Art !!
There are cafe facilities inside the galleries anyway
I suppose the cafe is a good place for dealing with excitable kids but would they be what people want running around in the Jerwood galleries?

Probably Jerwood will become just some kind of Kiddy Zoo
Full marks for the nearby toilets though, they are built to cater for truck loads of visitors :)

Yes I meant Cornwall in general. I moved there with my parents when I was 16 in 1984 then lived there till I was 38. My parent owned a BandB there and I worked at a couple of large butlins type holiday parks. When I moved there St Ives although it had a few artist studio type shops was nothing like it is now. That's what I'm trying to say it's totally changed. Cornwall was a deprived area like Hastings and had objective one funding from europe between 2000 to 2006.

Working class isn't just about fishing, it's also farming and seasonal work and low paid jobs.

I thought the idea of the Jerwood was to improve the area around the stade as well as the gallery so I presume that is why the cafe etc are there.
I think it opens on Saturday.
