It is true that people have been demanding better roads to ease the current congestion in the area for many years so why is the link road being built now ?
To allow the creation an 'Overspill' area with new homes and industrial units in an area of outstanding natural beauty.
Slightly cynical to suggest the "Link Road" is primarily for the existing connurbations of Hastings and Bexhill.
It seems mainly designed for the integration of a new village/small town on the outskirts or the area.

I am slightly suspicious along the lines of the "Beeching Cuts" in the Railways back in the 1960's.
There was political intent then to cut losses being made by the Railways but even though there was a lack of profitability in certain areas, the ministers in charge of employing "Beeching" (to decide where to make these cuts) were businessmen, heavily involved in Road Building, and therefore had an interest in promoting their own agenda and so supression of Railway competition would have been second nature to them.
If this scenario had happened 'today' there would have been massive public outcry.

Now we rely on our cars and find it easy to condemn those who would promote better Railway integration.
