This is quite worrying. Apparently the new mail service has only agreed to carry on without changing services for 3 years. I was reading an article the other day that said when Holland privatised their postal service 90% of their post offices closed in the first 3 years. :(

I'm afraid it's all now confirmed to be going to WHS on 12th March.
The Post Office not be running it but will Franchise it out to WHS who will run it themselves.
The dozen or so staff will be offerred relocation but P.O.'s will generally disappear from most of our Hight Streets eventually_ _ _

What will they do with the 'old' PO building?

I think the owner is the University of Brighton who are building a campus/teaching centre both at the rear and upstairs (which they currently occupy).
A three-sided building will emerge with a central atrium and the historically significant facade will be cleaned and restored:

It's reported that WHSmith is in trouble. Wonder how much longer they can survive. What will happen to the post office services then? Also, how is Smiths going to manage ther queues that will inevitably jam up their store? Many times I've given up trying to post parcels in the main PO due to the length of the queue and gone to another post office. In Smiths, the queues will be a nightmare.
