Architects ideas for a redeveloping Hastings, on show at Priory Meadow (opposite Waterstones) last weekend.

George Street
Shows some sort of 'souped up' entrance.
This does need tarting up a bit (IMHO) because it currently looks tatty.
Don't forget it is an amusements arcade on the left and an ordinary basic-looking family fish restaurant on the right.
Currently it is not especially inviting but looks can be deceptive.

Bottle Alley
Not sure what this entails - is it some kind of 'beach huts' with a narrow walk along their immediate frontage inside bottle alley?
Is it deep enough to make a case for beach huts.
The 'drop-downs' to the beach are possible, but remember it is shingle and not sand.

West Ascent
Looks interesting - are they proposing Fisherman's type Huts in St Leonards?

White Rock
Is pedestrianisation (loss of road) really feasible?

Middle Street
Looks vague and not very informative.

West Marina.
This one is really wild, including a cable car across Grosvenor Gardens.

I am not sure who exactly is going to pay to create such fanciful "Architect's" schemes for making Hastings potentially more attractive to tourism.
I think the Pier rebuilding is fairly substantial in terms of costs and engineering (largely funded by 'Lottery' money and I am more than happy it is being tackled now.
"The Jerwood", however, does not seem to be the 'honeypot' it was envisaged to be by Hastings Council.
"The Turner" at Margate is reported to have been a very large attraction in terms of revenue generation for the town but I don't have the figures for that or "Jerwood" in Hastings and the success of Margate's Turner Gallery seems to be founded upon free entrance which has a side effect of people feeling happy to spend cash after being drawn in on that basis.
Hasting's Jerwood is certainly not free to tourists and that may be a fatal drawback.
Why should tourists pay to visit in a holiday resort when the Galleries in London are free?
The "Jerwood" already has a relationship with the Council which granted it a prime location on very generous terms - which perhaps explains why it does not receive another subsidy from the council to enable it to grant free entrance to all.
