I love that. Maybe the council is really trying to tell us that, if it wasn't for the Blessed Baird, the town centre after dark would be even more insalubrious and unsafe than it is already!

And in reminding visitors that they are entering 1066 country, the local mandarins are making it clear that for ordinary people travelling about is almost as precarious as it was a thousand years ago!

There is a sign on the road towards Bexhill stating:

'Bexhill the birthplace of British motor racing'

Thankfully it does not say underneath:
'Speed Cameras in operation'.

Visitors must be even more bemused when, after passing the "motor racing" claim to fame, they enter a tiny, parochial town where all the cars are travelling at 3 miles per hour, guided myopically over the top of the steering wheel by over 70's characters in tweeds!

(For those who like to take offence, it's just a joke .. I like the quiet of Bexhill but it IS slow!).
