Barton school?

Postby louise cleaver » Wed Aug 23, 2006 7:15 pm

When I was about 4 years old, I attended a small school that was actually in a house on Sedlescombe rd north - in silverhill - in the year, 1965. It was called "Barton" If anyone can remember this school, or anything about it, please reply, as im intrigued as to what happened to it - I have some odd memories about the place _ _ _ thanks, Louise

Funny you mention this because I was going to ask about Barton's too. I went there in 1985 for a year. Would love to find out more about it.

That is interesting Rick, I did'nt realise it was still there in 1985. What do you remember about the school - as when I went there I was really young and only have vague recollections, I think that there were children of all ages?? :)

Don't remember much about Bartons. Only that theres photos of me standing in front of a big blue door with my parents. One memory i have of it is they had some clowns there one day and I was frightened of them

Dad was telling me that I was 5 years old and I went there for one year before I started at Blacklands School. He couldn't remember if Sedlescombe Rd North was the address but he definately remembers Bartons.

Bartons seem to have started after the war because before then it was a private house,No.67..It was run by Miss I.M.Dann and Miss R.E.Dann for girls and as a kindergarten..

This school used to be run by the 3 Miss Danns, and there were various other teachers Miss Foulkes, (went on to become Deputy Speaker in the House of Commons) Miss Smith, Mrs Attwood for PE_ _ _..thats about all I can recall although there was a young (to me then) teacher who came from Bexhill. Every year the children, who were good enough entered the Speech and Drama Competition at the White Rock Pavillion. The teaching ratio was really good only about 5 children in a form! 2 forms to a room.Ages 5 to 16.

The head was Miss Irene, her sister Rowena, (who always had headaches) and Miss Rosina who was there very rarely and usually to teach sewing . They used to live at 25 The Green.

Emphasis on Art, Drama, Sewing and singing. In addition to the 3 R's.

Believe it closed when teachers had to have a Diploma and Teaching qualification.

Was there from '56 until '66 very interesting experience. Would like to hear from anyone who was there at the same time_ _ __ _ _

Christine, Jenny, Gillian, Gina, Jackie, and others whose names I cannot recall.

I didn't attend Barton School myself but my mother's friend's neice went there. She was a few years older than me and I got her hand-me-downs whether I liked them or not. These were the school uniform items from Hell. I remember a terrible rainhood that had a kind of 'foreign legion' cape thing attached to it that fanned out and protected the back of your neck. There were also some hideous grey knickers which had a pocket in the side and my mum told me that was where I ought to put my hankie!
