I'm looking for any information, stories, memories, etc to do with Hydenye Boys School which once stood on the site which is now occupied by Helenswood lower school opposite the conquest.
Does anyone have any photos? none seem to exist in local books.
Many thanks.
(p.s. I may well have the spelling of Hydenye wrong.)

Re: Hydenye Boys School
My Directory gives the spelling as Hydneye, this seems to have been in a part of a private dwelling,Roselands ?,and could not have been very big as it was not listed in the trades section of the Directory..E.G.Maltby is listed, perhaps he was the headmaster..Do not forget that what is now known as the Ridge was named Old London Road pre 1939..

Hi Patrick, and thank you for your reply.
I am sure that the building was a large residence, and i know for sure that it was directly opposite the site where the conquest hospital now stands. I'm most intrigued by this school. I have only ever seen one picture. It was a very grand residence.
I do hope there is someone out there who remembers it.

Hi local lass,
I was a pupil at Hydneye house in the 50's and have quite a few photos. Can't say I enjoyed the experience very much!

David, thank you for your reply.
I would be so grateful if you would be willing to share both your memories of the building and area and also if you would upload any photos of Hydenye you are happy to have seen.
There is little written about the school and i am intrigued.
Kind regards

Re: Hydenye Boys School
Hi,
It was Hydneye House not Hydenye. I will write down some of my memories and post them.
I only came accross this post when googling E.G.Maltby. He was indeed the headmaster (before my time) and was the father of David Maltby, one of the Dambusters. I returned to the school when passing in either 1968 or 1969 and it was in the process of being cleared out. Mr Gerald Brodribb, the headmaster during my tenure was there, (he didn't seem as daunting at that time!) and he was chucking out all sorts of things including, (believe it or not!) the funny little wooden sight and some other navigational equipment that had been used on the Dambusters raid on the Moehne dam. This had always been in a display cabinet by a memorial plaque to David Maltby and others in the main hall. I took it and still have it in my (fairly vast) collection of space and aeronautics. I am in the process of cleaning it up to add it to my website www.astrocollection.com
I am not too hot at IT but am quite happy to scan in some of the photos and send them to you if you have an email address, mine is god@abbeyalliance.com (don't ask!)
All the best
David

Re: Hydenye Boys School
Thank you David. Its such a shame the building was knocked down. It looked such a beautiful place.
I went to to the school which now stands in its place. I remember the amphitheater still being there.
What a shame the rest is gone.
many thanks again David. Be great to see more.

Re: Hydenye Boys School
The building was nice, the school was a nightmare (probably more fun if one was queer but I wasn't!).
Most things you hear about the public school system are right but I did learn a lot, I had to, it was a choice between doing well or getting beaten.
Brutal but effective I suppose!
I haven't got that many photos that will show you much more than the ones on that website. I do have one of me (age 9) grabbing a kiss from Miss Norcock the under matron (unfortunate name!). The repercussions of that escapade were horrific. I have never been sure why it caused such a furore, it seemed a harmless enough prank. Probably because it had heterosexual overtones!

Re: Hydenye Boys School
Did the school later amalgamate with Glengorse School in Battle ? which later in the 1980's amalgamated with Battle School..So you had Glengorse which was originally an Eastbourne school which united with Telham which then in turn took in Hydeye and which then combined with Battle
