Hello,
I wonder if anyone can help me please. My Grandfather was born at 13 Station Road, Hastings in the late 1870s and by 1881 he and his parents were living at 1 St Andrews Mews.
I see from Virtual Earth that St Andrews Square is still there, but does anyone know if St Andrews Mews still exists?
Thank you for your help.
Regards

Re: St. Andrews Mews
The Mews is no longer there, even my local Directory of 1896 does not list it,however a map I have of Hastings dated about the 1890's ? shows where the entrance to the Mews could have been.(1)On the north side between Waldegrave and Cornwallis Streets,in the middle now occupied by houses and (2) On the corner of Cornwallis (south) and St.Andrews.on the site of what looks like a factory but is now a supermarket..Next time I am in the Library I will see if I can find out a bit more precise information_ _ _.

Re: St. Andrews Mews
Had a look through the Directorys of Hastings going back to the 1860's and could find no mention of St.Andrews Mews..The staff at the Library were very helpful and also showed me some maps and it was still no clearer because the maps did not show anywhere on the north side were there could be a mews, which differs from my own map_ _ _However there was a newspaper clipping from 1985 which has the opening of the St.Andrews (Mews) Market, but this is in Waldegrave Street which leads to St.Andrews Square..This was definitely a Mews there in days gone past ..In those days (1800's) Queens Road was originally St.Andrews Road_ _ _
Re: St. Andrews Mews
Thanks for looking into this Patrick. Intriguing. The area has changed a lot -obviously- like so many others.
I'm looking forward to paying a visit to Hastings this year hopefully. My Grandad's place of birth in Station Road is long gone too, but then we are talking over 100 years ago; but it would be nice to establish where these places were on a contemporary map.

Re: St. Andrews Mews
Just had a phone call from the local reference Library, they found out that the St. Andrews Mews is listed in Waldegrave Street, a Dick Russell, livery stable keeper @ job master,a John Woodcock ' Co.mineral water manufacturers and trayton Dancy, carpenters workshop are listed..No numbers are given in my 1896 Directory..They gave me some clues as to where to look next time I am in the library_ _ _

That's really interesting Patrick. You're going to so much trouble. This is very much appreciated.

Re: St. Andrews Mews
The Market where 'fur and feathers' pet shop is located is officially called called " St Andrews Mews market" .
It would make sence for it to be the location.

If you would like a picture of the Mews and Station Road,go to Google, type in Flickr, this is the photo-sharing site, click on search and type in St.Andrews Mews,Hastings or Station Road,Hastings,if you click on the name in the site you will get all the pictures taken,to enlarge the picture just click on it,you can then click on the larger picture to save it on your own file,My Pictures and you can then print it out if desired..
