G Potter and Sons, Painter and Decorater

Postby sue_young » Sat Mar 13, 2010 4:19 pm

We have an old photo which belonged to father who was brought up in London 1900 - 1914. It is a photo of a semi-detached house called East Lodge, ? it appears to be next to a big chimney thing. The writing on the bottom says St Leonards on Sea.
The view from across the road seems to have a shop frontage just in the frame
There is a large board on the wall of the house stating
G Potter and Sons, Decorater, Painter, Upholstrer and lots of other things. The ladies standing on the pavement are wearing long coats and dresses down to the floor and big hats so would assume late 19th early 20th century.
Can anyone help to find the address and area etc.?

We believe we now know the full address of East Lodge. It may be 83 Sedlescombe Road North. From looking at Google Streetview it appears to have been replaced by some new buildings which appear to be OAP bungalows? Can anyone remember the house being there?

There was an East Lodge at number 83 but next door was a private house so it is a puzzle as to where the house shown actually is..And I can find no reference to a G.Potter in the trade directories..To me it does not look like S.R.N_ _ _Pity the photo is not big enough to have a closer look..

Success at last !! In an 1896 Pikes Directory I found by chance George Potter at East Lodge..The road then was named Silverhill which started at where the junction of Bohemia Road and London Road now meet and carried on up to Paynton Road..East Lodge was part of Caversham Terrace and was on the corner of Alma Villas,on the left side where there is now a small chapel..It is possible that East Lodge was later demolished because of war damage..I am still not convinced that the picture shown is of E.L, because of the chimney next door and also E.L was on the corner of Alma Villas and the picture shows some premises next door..

When you say that there is a nameplate do you mean a board advertising G.P's services as a painter ? If so this would mean that the house is not in S.R.N but where G.P was actually working at the time, a common practice even today..It is the large chimney that is the puzzle,it gets in the way so to speak_ _ _I did find out that when you look at Google Maps you can manouvre the sight up and down the road..Click on any part of S.R.N and you will see a line with an arrow and you can work your way down from number 93,which is recognizable, to where 83 once was..It took me a while to figure it out but once I got going there was no stopping me..Clicking an actual house number on Google Maps is not always reliable..
