I was reading about Dora Montefiore who was a Suffragette. She died in 1932/33 at her home in Edwin Road. Her house was called 'Melbourne' and I have looked up and down the road but can't find a house of that name! Does anyone know if the house is still standing and what number it is? Thanks. Barb

Hello Barb,
Just caught up with your enquiry. If it of interest to your research on local Suffragettes I have a copy of the Hastings and St.Leanards Pictorial Advertiser dated Thursday April 17th 1913. The front page features before and after pictures of "Levetleigh", the home of Mr.Arthur du Cros (MP), allegedly 'fired by Suffragettes and completely ruined'.
Unfortunately the pages containing a full account of the incident plus further pictures are missing.
However, a further article in the paper reports " Militant Suffragists have apparently made their mark locally - In burning down Levetleigh they have brought off a big coup - The Member for Hastings is supposed to have "sold" the law breakers, and it is not perhaps suprising that they have retaliated - For the credit of the town, we hope there is no woman living amongst us who would be guilty of the sin of arson"
