yes, Glengorse School moved from Eastbourne to Battle in 1926, remained there and amalgamated with Hydneye and then Battle Abbey.

Was this 'Hydenye' school name pronounced 'Hidden Eye' or was it like a surname that isn't pronounced as it is spelt - sometimes termed 'counterintuitive'?

Beauchamp School (= Beecham School)
Waldegrave School (= Wargrave School)
Cholmondely School (= Chumley School)

'Alnwick' is another of those devilish English names that does not conform to reason. The ‘l’ and the ‘w’ are silent, you rhyme it with ‘panic’.
:D

Hi Richard
Hydenye, was I believe pronounced 'Hide knee'

When I was living in Hastings there was a shop in Queens Road almost opposite Thorcraft's name Featherstonhaugh, it may have been Featherstonehaugh, that is pronounced 'Fanshaw'.

Of course the village of Alnmouth near to Alnwick is pronounced with the 'l' so both syllables are said.
