This is a plan of the Merry Christmas beer house and lodging house in 1849-50. It comes from the Cresey Report on the Public Health of Hastings at that time. The top drawing is a section on line 'B'.

I'll post the inspector's comments on the Merry Christmas next.

Terry, have you got a photo of it ?

I don't have a photo of this one, I'm often down that way, so I'll try and get a photo of the current 59, but I don't know if it's the same building, it may have been rebuilt, replaced, or modified out of all recognition. It must be somewhere near the Crown.

Also I'm not sure if there's been some renumbering as in a photo I briefly saw recently of the New Moon (45 and 46 All Saint's St) its frontage seemed to be at street level, but the current 45 (there doesn't appear to be a 46 any more) is on a an elevated pavement. Unless there was another New Moon somewhere and that was the photo I saw, or it could have been taken at an odd angle.

I had a quick look on the National Archive's website and it suggests there was a fire at 59 All Sain't Street in or around 1880, which seems to be after its time as a beer house. Apparently some documents relating to the building are held at Hastings Museum and Art Gallery, but I have no idea if they'll be of any use .The beer house isn't mentuioned as far as I can see. It does mention Edward Paris in 1848 (something about removing a hog sty from the garden of Sarah Smith), 1851 and 1852, but those documents appear to be at the East Sussex Record Office at Lewes.

Here's a photo I took today of 59 All Saint's Street. It looks ancient, but looks can be decieving. Look at the pump house (built 1956), which since the demise of the New Broom/Malvern, may actually be the town's newest purpose built pub The Comet was built a year earlier and those in Robbo Street and elsewhere are conversions of existing buildings.

Hi Everyone

I think that number 59 All Saint's Street once belonged to my family - the Vennall's. They were fishermen and this was a fish shop (I think). If anyone knows anything about the Vennall's or Mann's, I'd love to know. Also, was Mann Street named after the Mann's?

Hope this helps. :)
