Good research whiffler!
A club it was indeed - for men only!
Your snippet says it closed late December 1981, after over a century of supplying gentlemen with an exclusive luxury club. Including a billiard room.
A magnificent 5 floor building on the corner of Warrior Square and the seafront.
From I. Castro, published in The Observer dated June 2017:
Gentlemen’s Club.
This image appeared in ‘The Architect’ in April 1884 with the caption “Gentlemen’s Club, St. Leonards on sea. This building is now in course of erection for the directors of the new club company. It occupies one of the finest sites on the Parade, in the most fashionable part of St. Leonards, and commands magnificent views of the sea coast and Parade. The new club will contain large coffee, smoking and billiard-rooms, and card rooms; also ten bedrooms, bathroom, for the convenience of London and country members. The chief entrance to the building faces Warrior Square, and will be protected from the winds by a large porch, the floor of which, as well as the whole of the corridors, lavatories, are to be laid with marble mosaic by Mr. Burke. The grand staircase’ and entrance framing will be of polished walnut. The building will, in all probability, be lighted by the incandescent electric light, for which the necessary arrangements have been made. The architect to the company is Mr. Henry Ward, AR.I.B.A., Mr. Peter Jenkins is the contractor”. Henry Ward was a prolific and diverse local architect, he designed Hastings & Bexhill Town Halls, The old Observer Building, Debenhams, part of the Buchanan Hospital and many churches in the local area.

Old pictures of Warrior Square
Re: Old pictures of Warrior Square
Nice one, Richard.
In an earlier contribution I remarked on the lack of symmetry in the buildings that conflicted with an 1860s sketch. My conclusion was that it was not built that way, but the references to rebuilding and the 1884 reference to its inception means I got that wrong.
Perhaps the plot on the Warrior Sq frontage was not enough for the project, so the adjacent Grand Parade plot was incorporated.
Where are the denizens of the Kelly's directories when you need them?
Where is UncleB ?

Re: Old pictures of Warrior Square
Anyway whiffler it appears that your guess that it was a seaside off-shoot of a London Club looks fairly accurate.
Gentleman’s clubs were ultra-exclusive, offering high society men an escape from the pressures of work and family, with potential members judged on their eligibility by class and gender. Some offered accommodation too.
Not sure what the building is used for now.
Must find time for a stroll out there one day and imagine the Hastings and London upper classes frequenting the place. How times have changed.

Re: Old pictures of Warrior Square
From results on general searches, it seems to be a number of flats, with some businesses registered. Nowadays there are more on-line businesses, so not exactly 'business premises'.
Re: Old pictures of Warrior Square
Awesome research whiffler, thank you again.
I have looked at that building on the corner of Warrior square since I first moved down hear 3 years ago and thought is such a shame it was in a right old state.
So much of the square has been renovated and looked bright and new and yet this building was shabby, delapidated and had a horrible 1970s glass converatory plonked on top of the balcony and had been used as a dumping ground for left over furniture and junk, not to mention the fact the wooden sides were rotting away.
I had tried to buy a flat on the sea front side back then but when I saw the extent of the damp damage inside and adjusted the offer price to get this repaired then the deal fell through (and it was taken off the market).
Just the other week I noticed they have started to paint the outside of the building (although the rotting conservatory remains) and I thought it a good time to revisit seeing if there are flats for sale there.
It is a stand out building in the square so I hoped to find out what it looked like before the conservatory was built.

Re: Old pictures of Warrior Square
I just wanted to let you all know that I finally managed to buy the flat that has the balcony attached and have now got clearance to remove it.
It may be a bit extreme to buy a flat just to do that, but it has enough original features and big windows to make an awesome home for us.
We have started to clear out all the 1980s "updates" - carpet, wooden racks, built in shelving, floor tiles, kitchen units, bathroom (ugh!) and have come across a few surprises along the way.
I'm thinking of creating a YouTube channel to document the renovation and discoveries - is this something any of you would want to see?
Just a thought.

Re: Old pictures of Warrior Square
May be interesting to see any old details of the interior ... as it was back in the day.
Re: Old pictures of Warrior Square
A current view would be quite intertesting - shame about the balcony, surely that would have been the icing on the cake?

Re: Old pictures of Warrior Square
I've been uploading mostly unedited footage of what is being done since we got the keys but will do some background intro to it and incorporate stills of the history behind it as I uncover more.
We have alreadt contacted the council planning dept to get a meeting to approve the removal of the conservatory and restore the original balcony, so once this is sorted we will get the outside back to its former glory.
We also found some interesting spaces in the flat that we didn't know were there - see Day 3 and Day 7 for these.
Tomorrow I get a few days to rip out most of the internal stud walls and work out how to repartition the space behind the main living room and will be uploading more videos of this.
Just for reference, I intended the videos initially as a way to keep my 87 year old mother involved in the work as she has a background in building the trade and has missed having the change to offer advice on the project. It isn't a conventional YouTube channel yet but I'll rework a lot of the footage when we get time in the spring once the work is done.

There is also some videos of a project in Brazil that we have on the go, just in case anyone wondered what that was doing there.
