My great-grandfather Josiah Diprose owned a grocery shop at 14 Gensing Road, St Leonards on Sea and I believe he and his family lived over the shop for many years. He was a grocer for 70 years. Can anyone tell me if the shop is still standing?? Does anyone have a photo of it they can email to me?? Do you know anything of the Diprose / Elphick families who lived in the area? Josiah married Rachel Elphick? Hope someone can help.

Dear Pam Maslin, do you have a husband or father named Roley, his mothers maiden name was Doris Gower?
Re: 14 Gensing Street St Leonards
Hi Pam,
I'm attaching info on Josiah Diprose's family from the 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses. The info is in Word, so you should be able to open it. Let me know if you can't and I can email it to you.
No info on the marriage or the children with parents Josiah and Rachel in the LDS British Isles Vital Records Index. Perhaps the records from their parish have not been transcribed yet for computer.
He was very easy to find (nice to have an unusual name to research!). The Diprose's lived in many of the same areas as my ancestors and one married an ancestor in Australia (many Hastings folks emigrated elsewhere). Some old records refer to the name as Deprose or Deeprose, so search under that as well when you are doing your research. Good luck with your research!

Re: 14 Gensing Street St Leonards
J.Diprose mentioned in 1896 Directory as having a shop in 14 Gensing, but in 1926 it was under the name of A.W,Heard and after that it was used for various trades mainly antique dealing..If I am correct it is an unusual shop and has been recently renovated perhaps converted to private use..if you like I can take a photo and send it on..

Re: 14 Gensing Street St Leonards
I hope that you have received the pictures..Number 14 is the one in which a red and white van is parked outside..Number 18 is on the corner..I have since found out that all these houses from number 14 to 18 were shops doing various trades and have been converted to houses..It seems that Gensing Road was at one time a busy ? shopping area !
Re: 14 Gensing Street St Leonards
I was born at 13 Gensing Road when the shop belonged to Backshalls the shoe repairer. No 14 was a grocer's shop while no.12 was Miltons, the greengrocer. There was a hairdresser/barber shop that belonged to Mr Welfare about no.10. My grandparents lived at Chapmans Dairy at 22 and 23 North Street.
