The Parish Church in St Mary Magdalene

Postby margaret » Thu Aug 31, 2006 8:11 pm

I would like to know if there is any information of the Parish Church in the parish of St Mary Magdalene, Hastings. My G.Grandparents (Job and Clara Palmer) married there in 1873. Is there any history or photos on the church that is available? Does the church still exist?

The Greek Orthadox Church of St Mary Magdalene is at the bottom of Church Road. There are two pictures of it on our Churches Gallery. ;)

I would dearly love to see a photo of St Andrews Church _ _ __ _ __ _ _. my grand parents were married there in 1939_ _ __ _ _. I understand it was knocked down and a petrol station built over it?

As my Grt grandparents and grnadparents were living in St Andrews Square I gather it must be of been around this area. Grt Granny died in 1978 and I haven't been back to Hastings since , but I do have such found memories of the place.

The Church was knocked down by the council in the late 70s or early eighties_ _ _
There were protesters who squatted inside the building to try and save it_ _ _
There were some large painted panels by Robert Tressel that were the only ones of thier type and the protesters tried to cut them out but only managed to save one before they were evicted and the church knocked down..

The church was in Queens Road.you are right about the petrol station which was once part of Safeway's and today is Morrisons,at one time all the land now occupied by the supermarket was part of the gas works and bus depot..if you are interested you may find that the gas works was owned by Liberal supporters in opposition to the Conservative run gas works, though I may stand corrected on that ..Further research seems to point to the decline of the Liberal Party in Hastings_ _ _
