I am researching my family history from the area of Hastings and I get confused to the different areas that come up. (I live in Australia) My Grandfather (Charles William Palmer) was born in 1877 at Alexandra Tce, St Leonards on Sea. His father (Job Palmer) died in 1888 at St John's Road, St Mary in the Castle. Are these places districts or suburbs of Hastings and do the streets I mentioned still exist today? If they do is there any history on those places?

Hi Margaret
I've never heard of Alexandra Tce but St John's Road and St Mary in the Castle still exist.

There was an Alexandra Terrace in St.Leonards which continued into Alexandra Street and led to the railway station ,and both have been changed to Alexandra Road ..I think the name was probably changed in the early part of the last century..the terrace was about three times longer than the street..

Thank you for your responses to my query, much appreciated.
Are St Leonards on Sea and St Mary in the Castle districts/suburbs of Hastings?

Re: St Leonards on Sea
St.Leonards started out as a specially built rich mans retreat but over the years has become a part of Hastings and it is hard to tell whether you are in Hastings or St.Leonards..St Marys in the Castle is in the centre of the Pelham Crescent beneath the Castle,I am sure there will be a picture of it on the site somewhere,St.Johns Road is actually in St.Leonards..

St Leonards
In 1871 my great grandfather, John Banks bn 1849 Pevensey, was a butcher, lodging with Geo Harris, also a butcher. Their address was 9 Ashdown and Olivers Cottages, St Mary in the Castle, Hastings.
Does anyone know where this/these places were/are?
In 1881 he was a butcher, employing 1 man, 1 boy, at Albert Terrace, St Leonards - where was this?
In 1891/1901 he was at 74 Bohemia Road and in 1911 he was at 61 Bohemia Road, both shops I have seen recently. My grandmother, Ada Banks, also lived and worked at these places.
Any information would be much appreciated.

In 1891 John Banks was a butchers in 74 Bohemia Road and also at 4 Tower Road, there was a James Banks, butcher at Old London Road..and a George Banks, butcher at 22 Kings Road. Albert Terrace was in London Road, in Halton I believe, just before you get to Ore. There is noone by the name of Banks Directory neither is in the 1896 there a butcher listed..As to Ashdown and Olivers these were most likely in streets in Halton ?
