I remember Ken Apps very well. He was a bit of a hero of mine sat in his bike shop surrounded by a million and one bits. I was really into bikes (still am) and Ken used to do all the difficult stuff on my wheels and show me all the fancy stuff he'd got hidden away. He was was fantastic, always had time. I don't live in Hastings anymore, but my Dad does and every time I'm there I give a nod to his shop.

Remember crawling across the toilet roof to get on to the air raid shelter roof. I was 'reprimanded' by a lady once for sitting on the Womans Toilet steps. Heading along the village centre towards Red Lake there was (I'm sure) an area of waste ground on the right hand side. Before you got to the chip shop. After the pub. I believe they built a clinic on it but I'm sure it was waste ground. Does anyone know why it was waste ground and what was there originally.
I used to collect milk in a jug every morning from the dairy at the end of the village. Would spend time watching the blacksmith. Playing cricket in Canute Road. I thought the air raid siren was on a tall lamp post outside the white house. There was a girl who lived in the white house I'm sure. Scrumping apples from the vicarage and getting caught every now and then'

In the 1950s before Sandown school was on The Ridge we use to call that land Arvy Tarvy. I never knew why does anyone know?...We use to play there where the cinder bike track was .There were old cars dumped by the damson bushies which we imaged were part of our wagon train when playing cowboys and indians. We also spent a lot of time building camps over Coghurst Woods and The Gate House was often Nottingham Castle and Coghurst Woods became Sherwood when playing Robin Hood...I remember the Iron Bridge well there were a lot of wagtail nest in the sides of the railway track...

How lovely to read these memories. Holmans wholesale and retail tobacconist and confectionery shop was our family business. I remember looking down from his office to the boiler room, and the many sweets he made and sold, including Holmans chest relievers. In the village I remember Lakers shoe shop, Weavers hair salon, the China shop, Christchurch, International stores and my Sunday school across the road (Grove Road?). Great memories.

The barber on The Ridge was definitely Bill Barham. There was another in the village, bottom of Saxon Road I think. Called Passenger (Fred?). Known to us as "Johnny Boy" Passenger because of what he had in the window - gentlemen's requisites for the weekend, commonly sold by barbers in days gone by.
